T HE PAST AS A JUMP BOARD, NOT AS A SOFA
The Wolfgangsee region has an interesting literary past. »Wolfgangsee Literature« is the name given to literary activities around the Wolfgangsee and fulfills the desire to bring the power of literature closer to the people
Since time immemorial, this region has had a special appeal to art and culture. Literati, such as Leo Perutz, Alexander Lernet-Holenia, and Hilde Spiel, who liked Wolfgangsee and chose him as a "creative retreat", have been increasingly included in the circle of the active perception of our society. The desire to achieve the following goals with this project 20 years ago has largely been fulfilled:
- Respect for the artistic heritage created in the region for
- Consolidating the well-known literati and their works in the
consciousness of the local population, with all people interested in
culture, and with our guests at the Wolfgangsee.
- Revival of the literary tradition of the Wolfgangsee region.
- Increase of literary activities by setting sophisticated actions.
WHEN WE’VE GONE, WE CAME BACK SOON,
MELTED DOWN THE LAST SNOWFLAKE,
BEAUTIFUL LILAC ALLREADY IN BLOOM,
AND SOON JASMIN BLOSSOMS AT THE LAKE.
WHAT PASSES BY, ALLREADY PASSED,
MAYBE FOLLOWES WONDERFUL
AGAIN AND AGAIN SNOW AND ROSES
YEAR AFTER YEAR.
With this poem, Alexander Lernet-Holenia has captured a mood that equally pleases guests, locals and friends of the Wolfgangsee. For Alexander Lernet-Holenia and his writer colleagues Hilde Spiel
and Leo Perutz, St. Wolfgang was a second home and creative retreat at the same time. Lernet-Holenia and Hilde Spiel lived here in their own country villas. For many years Leo Perutz was a regular guest of St. Wolfgang - only interrupted by the time in Israel's exile.
Here, he has worked intensively on his novel "At night under the stone bridge". Hilde Spiel’s "confusion on Lake Wolfgang" and "Baumfrevel (tree vandalism)" are strongly influenced by this area. In the fifties, Hilde Spiels villa - in the immediate vicinity of Lernet-Holenia - was the intellectual center and "literary salon": Heimito von Doderer,
Thomas Bernhard, Friedrich Torberg and many other artists and guests gathered here and enjoyed Lake Wolfgang.
LITERATE PARKWAY AT THE WOLFGANGSEE
In the area of the "Ferienhort am Wolfgangsee" in the district of Ried, a former k.u.k. Marineschool and today a school economic professions, the literate parkway has existed for 20 years now. Harmoniously integrated into the bank, this unique "Readers arena" houses three monuments of the poets mentioned.
The artist Prof. Josef Symon, who also produced the monuments in an artistically high-quality manner, was won for the design of the park. The auditorium in the "Literatenpark am Wolfgangsee", in which readings and lectures are held, and sometimes the Mass is celebrated, accommodates up to 100 people.
A walk connects the monuments of the individual poets. For guests and visitors, the facility is an interesting destination for a cultural hike along Lake Wolfgang.
